The sun is shining again, Kanye West is about to take over the summer months and I can’t contain my excitement much longer. The first thing I did when I logged on at work this morning was to book off June 1st and June 8th. On the former date Kanye West will release his eighth studio album, and on the 8th Kanye and Cudi will release their long-rumoured joint album under their group name Kids See Ghost, which Kanye filed a trademark for in November 2017.
After a very acrimonious public fallout in 2016, it’s fantastic to see the pair iron out their differences and get back to making music together. ‘Gorgeous’, ‘Erase Me’, ‘Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1’, ‘Welcome To Heartbreak’, ‘All of The Lights’… they’ve always been such a dynamic and interesting duo, with Kanye getting the best out of Cudi as much as Cudi clearly inspires Kanye’s artistic evolution post-Graduation.
Since cancelling the remainder of his Saint Pablo tour and admitting himself to hospital for psychiatric evaluation in November 2016, the Chicago producer-rapper has kept a relatively low profile. It appears that his mental breakdown has given him a new lease on his life, tweeting yesterday that “life keeps getting better and better.” Kanye is not the only one bouncing back from mental health problems, with Cudi too checking into rehab for depression and suicidal thoughts in October 2016 just weeks before Kanye’s very public meltdown. Where mental health is concerned, there is no healing power like music, so let’s hope Kids See Ghost can provide some creative catharsis for the duo behind it as well as valuable comfort and encouragement for its listeners. And dope beats. Don’t forget the dope beats.
No doubt, it’s a very exciting time to be a Kanye fan. Not only is he releasing two albums in the same week, but new albums were also announced last night for fellow G.O.O.D. Music artists Pusha T and Teyana Taylor- yes, THAT Teyana Taylor- due out on May 25 and June 22 respectively. Both albums are reportedly produced in their entirety by Kanye West. After the chaotic rollout of Kanye’s last album, The Life of Pablo, I’m gonna try my very best not to get too excited, but for now all we can do is shut up, be grateful and pray to the music gods that this is really happening. Oh how I missed you Yeezy season.
